Ramey Hyde Vineyard Chardonnay 2017

14.5% abv

“The 2017 Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard is bold and racy. Orange peel, mint, tropical fruit and spice all flesh out effortlessly. The 2017 shows all of the creaminess and density that is such a signature of Hyde Chardonnays. Although the 2017 is quite expressive today, my sense is that it will be even better with more time in bottle.” 2020 – 2027
94 Points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, April 2020

Hyde Vineyard is situated on gently rolling slopes of the Carneros appellation, on the Napa side. The soils are quite heavy Haire Clay Loam about 30 inches deep with impenetrable clay subsoil which limits vine vigor and crop yield. Summer temperatures are kept relatively cool by marine air flowing through the Petaluma Gap. Ancient creek beds provide drainage and add a scattering of rocks. The Ramey Wine Cellars blocks of Chardonnay were planted between 1980 and 1999 and are Wente, Robert Young and Long field selections.

Whole grape cluster ferment for phenolic delicacy. Native yeast and full native malolactic fermentation take place in barrel, with sur lies batonnage. Aging After aging 20 months in 25% new François Frères and Taransaud Beaune French oak barrels, the Chardonnay was traditionally fined for clarity and texture and bottled without filtration.

Ramey Wine Cellars was founded in 1996 by David Ramey and his wife Carla, after David had worked for almost two decades creating benchmark wines for such wineries as Matanzas Creek, Chalk Hill, Dominus Estate and Rudd Estate. Located just off the town square in Healdsburg, the winery is perfectly placed to make use of the great Sonoma and Carneros terroir famous for the quality of their Chardonnays.

Ramey's philosophy is to make hand-crafted wines that see the marriage of an terroir and Old World tradition with New World innovation and progress. Over the years, David has helped pioneer traditional, artisan winemaking techniques in California. His efforts have rippled through the winemaking community, helping to shape the way many wines in the United States are made today. His groundbreaking work with indigenous yeasts, sur lies aging and malolactic and barrel fermentation yielded a new California style that was more luscious and richer in nuance and tone than previously known. As a result, he created a benchmark style now emulated by many.
