Ramey Ritchie Vineyard Chardonnay 2017

14.5% abv

Vol- 75cl

“The 2017 Chardonnay Ritchie Vineyard needs a bit of time in bottle to be at its most expressive. It shows fine depth, creaminess and energy, but the elements are not all put together just yet. Light apricot, butter and floral notes hint at what is to come.” 2020 – 2027
93 Points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, April 2020

Kent Ritchie’s Vineyard is situated directly in the center of the Russian River appellation with Ramey’s block planted in 1972 to the old Wente selection. Widely spaced—the fashion at the time—these old vines with their gnarly trunks produce tiny quantities of grapes per vine. The benchland soil is pure Goldridge Loam, common to great vineyards in this part of the Russian River Valley widely spaced, as was the fashion in the early ‘70s. These old, gnarly trunked vines produce small clusters with distinct “hen and chick” berry sizes. Ramey have worked with the same block of Ritchie Vineyard Chardonnay since 2002. The floral character of the small portion of Musqué lends an aromatic lift while the Old Wente provides structure and acidity.

Ramey Wine Cellars was founded in 1996 by David Ramey and his wife Carla, after David had worked for almost two decades creating benchmark wines for such wineries as Matanzas Creek, Chalk Hill, Dominus Estate and Rudd Estate. Located just off the town square in Healdsburg, the winery is perfectly placed to make use of the great Sonoma and Carneros terroir famous for the quality of their Chardonnays.

Ramey's philosophy is to make hand-crafted wines that see the marriage of an terroir and Old World tradition with New World innovation and progress. Over the years, David has helped pioneer traditional, artisan winemaking techniques in California. His efforts have rippled through the winemaking community, helping to shape the way many wines in the United States are made today. His groundbreaking work with indigenous yeasts, sur lies aging and malolactic and barrel fermentation yielded a new California style that was more luscious and richer in nuance and tone than previously known. As a result, he created a benchmark style now emulated by many.
