Samuel Billaud Chablis 2022

12.5% abv

Vol- 75cl

“No oak influence but aged on lees. Not as aromatic as the Petit Chablis. A little more herbal and cedary. Lovely tension and assertive purity. Clean edges, salty aftertaste. It has a touch more concentration than the Petit Chablis but if you like a more aromatic style, go for the slightly cheaper Petit Chablis even if the straight Chablis tops it very slightly in overall quality. The differences seem more stylistic than qualitative, at least at this early stage, though the Chablis will probably age a bit longer.” 16.5. jancisrobinson.com (JH), July 23

Let’s cut to the chase. Samuel Billaud is one of the most exciting winemakers in Chablis. He has the “touch” that elevates wines to another level, an uncommon sense of completeness and complexity. Would I put him in the same tier as Vincent Dauvissat and Raveneau? I would. “The 2022 growing season was easier than in 2021, with no problems of disease,” Billaud told me as we worked our way through a complete line-up of cuvées. “During the summer, there was just a little hydric stress, but only in the young vines. We started picking on August 25, cropped between 30hL/ha for the Grand Crus up to 55hL/ha for the Petit Chablis. There are no changes with the vinification. It’s just the harvests that change.” Readers should check out Billaud’s stunning Premier Cru Fourneaux and Montée de Tonnerre in 2021, while the Grand Crus of Blanchot and Bougros were the high points of my entire trip.
