San Giusto A Rentennano ‘Percarlo’ 2013

14% abv

Vol- 75cl

“A wine of extraordinary finesse, the 2013 Percarlo is utterly magnificent. Creamy and beautifully layered in the glass, the 2013 speaks to finesse more than the power and explosiveness that is often found here. With time in the glass, the mid-palate fleshes out and the flavors gain in intensity and darkness. When young, Percarlo is often forbiddingly tannic, but the gradual move towards larger format barrels and casks has, among other things, given the wine much more textural elegance. I can’t wait to see how it ages. This is one of the most complete and strikingly beautiful wines of the vintage.” 2020 – 2038
98 Points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, July 2016

Percarlo is made from 100% estate grown Sangiovese grapes, especially selected bunch per bunch, from the best zones of eestate vineyards, which have a low yield of 1 Kg grapes per vine. The grapes are usually matured to an extra degree of ripeness. Fermentation and maceration take place using natural yeasts in enameled concrete vats for as long as 35 days. Percarlo is aged for 22 months in French barriques (Allier, Nevers) of 225 and 500 liters and barrel of 3000 litres. Then kept in bottle for another 18 months before being released.
First produced in 1983 and one of the undisputed icon Sangiovese wines of the Classico.

Originally a medieval monastery, the estate is situated in the southernmost part of Chianti Classico wine region and comprises 160 hectares – with 31 dedicated to vineyards, 11 to olives and the remaining made up of forest and agricultural land.

The Martini di Cigala family took over the property in 1914 and it has remained in the family ever since. Since 1992, it’s been in the hands of the family’s third generation, Anna, Lucia, Elisabetta, Francesco, Alessandro and Luca.

The success of the wines is due to a combination of factors: low yields, meticulous care in the selection of berries, the vineyard’s high diurnal temperature shift, as well as a no-expense-spared approach to the wine’s élevage – with both Percarlo and La Ricolma aged in the finest French barriques.

The first bottling of their Chianti Classico Riserva was the 1975 vintage, later named Le Baròncole (from the 2000 vintage onwards). The first vintage of Percarlo was 1983 and the first La Ricolma was made in 1993. The estate also makes a Chianti Classico, a Rosato and a Vin Santo, as well as their own olive oil.
