Sordo Barolo Gabutti (BARDO) 2011

14.5% abv

Vol- 75cl

The colour not as bright as the Ravera, a lovely tone and very stable over time. Floral aromas with hints of fresh fruit and sweet spices on the palate, a quite savory, well-structured wine, with acids and tannins nicely in step; the latter stand out and tend to be sweet. IT IS a very ageable wine that after proper ageing acquires signs of its pedigree, great elegance, marked minerality and
remarkable personality.

A vineyard planted in one of the subzones, defined as “top of the line, with high quality characteristics, among the most interesting and prestigious of the municipality of Serralunga d’Alba.. From vines of 35-50 years old grown at altitudes of up to 250-300 metres. Once selected, the grapes undergo crushing and destemming. Vinification with fermentation in stainless steel temperature controlled vats with long submerged-cap maceration for between 4 and 7 weeks. Natural malolactic fermentation at temperature 20°, the wine is then transferred into stainless steel for 2-4 months. The wine is then transferred to large Slavonian oak barrels for 24 months. Before bottling the wine spends a further 6 months in stainless steel for refinement.

Renowned the world over, this noble descendent of Nebbiolo wine has its roots in the Italian Unification. Many illustrious figures bore witness to its origins, like Marchesa Giulia Falletti di Barolo, Count Cavour and the first royalty from the House of Savoia. An austere, generous wine, quite ageable, which is considered a merit in Italian oenology. The municipalities in the Barolo production area are: La Morra, Monforte, Serralunga d’Alba (with its exceptionally well-preserved medieval military fortress), Castiglio Falletto (its symbol, a round medieval tower, is private property just like the manor), Novello, Grinzane Cavour. Verduno, Diano d’Alba, Cherasco and Roddi.

Sordo was founded in 1912 by Giuseppe Sordo, the present owner’s grandfather, and is now under the guidance of its third generation, Giorgio Sordo, with his daughter Paola by his side. Situated in the district of Castiglione Falleto and overlooking the slopes of La Morra, Sordo is unique in that it bottles 8 Barolo Cru wines, the only producer able to do this in the entire region.
As well as bottling traditional varieties such as Dolcetto and Barbera, they also produce the peppery Verduno Pelaverga, one of the smallest DOCs in Italy. The whites comprise the region’s historic Arneis, along with Chardonnay, Viognier and Sauvignon Blanc, which as well as being bottled separately go to make the captivating Rapujè Bianco. They also produce a Barbaresco from several plots in Barbaresco, Treiso and Neive.3 hectares, covering the areas of Castiglione Falletto, Serralunga d’Alba, Monforte d’Alba, Barolo, Novello, La Morra, Verduno, Grinzane Cavour and Vezza d’Alba. Tradition and terroir lay at the heart
of Sordo. Giorgio makes wine in a very similar way to his grandfather; after a gentle pressing and fermentation at around 30C, the wines continue to macerate for around 40 to 50 days, after which they are matured in large Slovenian oak barrels, which range from 50hl to 120hl and are used to preserve the unique essence of each cru.
