Sordo Barolo Monvigliero 2017

14.5% abv

Vol- 75cl

One of the most well-known and coveted vineyards planted in the municipality of Verduno. Due to its special microclimate, from researchers to experts, this historic vineyard has been considered a grand cru, among the best vineyard terrains in the area.

To the eye, it takes on a quite beautiful colour, never too intense, but very stable over time. The bouquet is rich, spacious and quite lingering. It recalls fresh fruit, small fruit in particular, inner-mouth spiciness, mountain hay and autumn leaves. Excellent structure; tannins and acids very nicely in step. IT IS a wine worthy of the fame it has always enjoyed.

From 35-40 year old vines frown at altitudes of 280-320 metres. Once the grapes have been selected they are crushed and destemmed. Vinification with fermentation in stainless steel temperature controlled vats with long submerged-cap maceration for four to seven weeks. Natural malolactic fermentation at temperature 20 degrees. Storage in stainless steel for two to four months. The wine is then transferred to large Slavonian oak barrels for 24 months. Before bottling the wine spends a further six months in stainless steel for refinement.

Renowned the world over, this noble descendent of Nebbiolo wine has its roots in the Italian Unification. Many illustrious figures bore witness to its origins, like Marchesa Giulia Falletti di Barolo, Count Cavour and the first royalty from the House of Savoia. An austere, generous wine, quite ageable, which is considered a merit in Italian oenology. The municipalities in the Barolo production area are: La Morra, Monforte, Serralunga d’Alba (with its exceptionally well-preserved medieval military fortress), Castiglio Falletto (its symbol, a round medieval tower, is private property just like the manor), Novello, Grinzane Cavour. Verduno, Diano d’Alba, Cherasco and Roddi.

Sordo was founded in 1912 by Giuseppe Sordo, the present owner’s grandfather, and is now under the guidance of it's third generation, Giorgio Sordo, with his daughter Paola by his side. Situated in the district of Castiglione Falleto and overlooking the slopes of La Morra, Sordo is unique in that it bottles 8 Barolo Cru wines, the only producer able to do this in the entire region.
As well as bottling traditional varieties such as Dolcetto and Barbera, they also produce the peppery Verduno Pelaverga, one of the smallest DOCs in Italy. The whites comprise the region’s historic Arneis, along with Chardonnay, Viognier and Sauvignon Blanc, which as well as being bottled separately go to make the captivating Rapujè Bianco. They also produce a Barbaresco from several plots in Barbaresco, Treiso and Neive.3 hectares, covering the areas of Castiglione Falletto, Serralunga d’Alba, Monforte d’Alba, Barolo, Novello, La Morra, Verduno, Grinzane Cavour and Vezza d’Alba. Tradition and terroir lay at the heart
of Sordo. Giorgio makes wine in a very similar way to his grandfather; after a gentle pressing and fermentation at around 30C, the wines continue to macerate for around 40 to 50 days, after which they are matured in large Slovenian oak barrels, which range from 50hl to 120hl and are used to preserve the unique essence of each cru.
