Sugrue The Trouble with Dreams 2017

12% abv

Vol- 75cl

Notes of flint, oyster shell, pineapple with crushed grains, hay and shortbread. On the palate a distinct salinity with sharp Chardonnay attack making the wine precise, pure and clean. Acidity and tropical fruit flavours are balanced with biscuit and pastry tones giving richness and complexity. Restrained and fine, this has outstanding potential for further development.

Single vintage, multi site cuvee comprising 60% Chardonnay and 40% Pinot Noir. Vineyards include, Jenkyn Place in Hampshire, planted 2004 as well as Mount Harry, East Sussex and Storrington Priory Vineyard, West Sussex. The 2017 is the smallest vintage yet owing to bad frosts which threatened to wipe out the whole crop, only 7,700 bottles produced. After picking, the grapes were mostly fermented in stainless stell, with 10% spending time in barrel with partial malolactic fermentation.Disgorged after 3 years on lees with a dosage of 8g/l.

“Dermot Sugrue is the best winemaker in England.” Steven Spurrier, June 2018

“A most subtle hint of petrichor precedes the creamy notions of raw, citrus-zest-flecked shortcrust pastry on the nose. The palate comes in with a serene litheness that is balanced and harmonious. There is something sleek, something weightless about this that nonetheless comes with resonance and depth. Bottle age will make this shine even more.”

In 2006, acclaimed winemaker Dermot Sugrue planted at Storrington Priory, a small vineyard at the foot of the South Downs. The first release of Sugrue was ‘The Trouble with Dreams’ 2009 vintage which went on sale in 2013, rapidly gaining critical acclaim.
Some years after a degree in Environmental Sciences at the University of East Anglia, Dermot studied Viticulture and Oenology at Plumpton College, Sussex. Following vintages in the UK he completed two seasons working in Bordeaux, at Chateau l’Eglise-Clinet, Pomerol and Chateau Leoville-Barton, St Julien. He joined Nyetimber in 2003 and was appointed Winemaker in 2004. Over the following years he oversaw Nyetimber’s emergence as one of the world’s greatest sparkling wine producers. He worked the 2006 vintage in Champagne for Jacquinot & Fils before joining Harry and Pip Goring to set up Wiston Estate winery, which is where he also crafts Sugrue. Dermot is also the winemaker for a number of highly respected wines produced under contract at Wiston, including Digby Fine English, Jenkyn Place and new producer Black Dog Hill as well as a good number of others.

Dermot has been hailed England's best winemaker by the legends that are Steven Spurrier & Hugh Johnson.
