Warm and rugged, Talisker is the Isle of Skye in liquid form. Distilled on the southern shores of Loch Harport, Talisker dates back to 1830 when the farming tenants of Talisker House, Hugh and Kenneth MacAskill, leased a bit of land and a found a good use for an abundance of barley, peat and, of course, water. In 1894, The Talkisker Distillers Co. Ltd was founded and, four years later, merged with Dailuane-Glenlivet Distillers and Imperial Distillers to create the Dailuaine-Talisker Distilleries Ltd. In 1916 the company was bought over by a consortium made up of the Glasgow brokers and blenders W.P. Lowrie & Co., John Walker & Sons Ltd and John Dewar and Sons Ltd, ultimately ending up in the hands of what is now known as Diageo in 1925.
Talisker Storm
45.8% abv
Released in early 2013, Talisker Storm has all the warm, peppery characteristics that we love in the 10 year old, but has been turbo-charged with more smoke, spices, and flavours.
At first, the nose is restrained yet spicy, with a hint of struck matches, which gives way to reveal a honeyed sweet maltiness with ripe red berry fruit. Eventually a little well integrated mellow smoke drifts across the scene as a wild sea turns up briny, fresh clean notes, and an oily explosion of pepper.
Initially, the Storm is mellow and rich in the mouth then quickly very spicy and increasingly stormy as the Talisker heat comes through. It’s as if the pure, tongue-coating sweetness joins hands with a deep nutty smokiness to embrace those spicier notes. The flavour is elegantly drawn out with a good balance between sweetness, smoke and salt, which is all the more evident when a little water is added.
The finish is clean and warming, with a lasting smooth aftertaste with plenty of peat- a must try!
