The Ornellaia estate was first the creation of Ludovico Antinori. His desire to set his own standards apart from the family firm had led him to the Tuscan Coast at Bolgheri, adjacent to his cousin Nicolo Incia's Tenuta San Guido of Sassicaia. The combination of soil and man made this one of the pre-eminent modern wineries of Italian fine wine. The turn of the century saw the estate move into the ownenrship of that other Tuscan royal wine family, Frescobaldi, following a short period of joint ownership with California's Mondavi. The Bordeaux influenced wines of the estate are icons of International Styled Italian wine.
Tenuta del Ornellaia Le Volte Toscana IGT 2021
13% abv
Deep, dark purple, full bodied blackberries, stewed plums, black cherries, a little funky. Dry, more dark fruit on the palate, hint of tobacco, nicely balanced, some cedar notes.
“The 2021 Le Volte dell’Ornellaia is a potent, brooding wine. Black cherry, gravel, dried herbs, chocolate, leather and tobacco are all amplified in this potent Maremma red. The 2021 is one of the richest Le Voltes I can remember tasting” 2021 -2029

The different varietals – 70% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Sangiovese – were fermented separately in small steel tanks to maintain their varietal characteristics. The alcoholic fermentation was followed by malolactic fermentation, again in steel tanks. The wine was then aged for 10 months, partly in barrique used previously for Ornellaia and partly in concrete tanks, to obtain the perfect balance between tannic structure and an expression of fresh fruit.
