Van Biljon Wines Cinq 2017

14.4% abv

Vol- 75cl

This wine makes a bold statement with its powerful structure and expressive fruit composition. The classic oak character is seamlessly integrated with the fruit and the fresh berry acid gives the wine vibrance and purity of fruit. The firm tannins are in perfect harmony with the wine leaving a lingering fruit sensation and satisfaction.

The 2017 CINQ is a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Cab Franc, 11% Merlot, 6% Malbec, and 6% Petit Verdot. The focus is on producing premium quality grapes which are hand picked in small batches. The grapes are then fermented on the farm using traditional wine making techniques combined with modem technology and minimal mechanical intervention to produce classic and powerful wines. The wine is matured in carefully selected French oak barrels for 18 months, blended and bottled.

The Van Biljon winery is nestled on the southern slopes of the now highly regarded Polkadraai Hills. The Polkadraai ward, just outside Stellenbosch, is composed of decomposed granite soils and is heavily influenced by the False Bay breezes to the South. This microclimate has created to perfect environment for Bordeaux varietals to flourish.

As the name of the wine, Cinq, eludes to, this wines is made from all the five classic Bordeaux varietals, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot. The estate is run by husband and wife team Julia and Anton van Biljon and the wines are made by head winemaker Chris Keet, who is known throughout the Cape as one of the most accomplished experts on Bordeaux varietal wines. While always in the upper echelons of scores within its peer group, the 2015 vintage also holds the accolade for best Red Blend of the year in 2020. While many strive for bold wines full of extraction and new oak, Cinq nis noticeable for its supreme elegance and sartorial panache. This is a wine of discretion and nuance and has fast become one of the icons of the Cape.
