Vieux Telegraphe Chateauneuf du Pape Rouge 2021

14% abv

Vol- 75cl

Made from predominantly three grape varieties, 65% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 15% Mourvèdre plus 5% Cinsault and Clairette. In their state-of-the-art gravity flow winery, the grapes are partially destemmed and are fermented in both stainless steel and wood cuvees.
The blending is done at the end of June after which the wine is matured in large foudres for 20 months. The red wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered and display tremendous concentration and intense flavours of dark cherry and “garrigue”. The best vintages will age for 20 years and more.

Daniel’s notes for 2021:

The Vieux Télégraphe red has a personality without excess, balanced and fresh. the colour is deep without being dense, the nose is in the presence of a bouquet of a bouquet of spicy and slightly mentholated red fruits. The mouth is in perfect harmony. The mouth is in perfect harmony with the nose, we find the nervousness of red fruits, it is straight, elegant, slightly vegetal and ends on tannins of a rare finesse; a 2021 which breaks the series of series of sunny vintages that we have been given to produce since 2015 and which by its balance, will certainly create some nice surprises with ageing.

Vieux Telegraph is made exclusively from old vines (averaging 70 years old) all around the ‘Crau’, the finest terroir in Châteauneuf du Pape. The particularly hot microclimate is such that the Bruniers, owners of the estate for almost a century, are able to harvest as much as a week ahead of their neighbours. 65% Grenache Noir, 15% Mourvèdre, 15% Syrah, Cinsault, Clairette and sundry others 5%. Maturation is 20-22 months in large French oak foudres (60hl); bottling is unfined and unfiltered, then released after 2 years.

Importantly Vieux Télégraphe does not produce a “super cuvée” so all their best fruit goes into this wine (the younger vines are used in their Télégramme).
