Waterford is a 120 hectare estate situated in the stunningly beautiful Blauwklippen Valley, part of the Stellenbosch wine region. The property was identified and created by the Ord and Arnold families from a subsection of the old Stellenrust farm. Kevin Arnold has built a brilliant team at Waterford built around his own winemaking prowess backed up by the outstanding talents of winemaker Mark le Roux. The Estate is really performing at the very peak of its powers making outstanding red and white wines both with the ability to age gracefully. The Estate itself is also worth a visit if you ever happen to find yourself in the region and Kevin’s ‘safari tour’ of the property is something not to be missed!
Waterford Estate Grenache Noir 2015
Plush red cherry and exotic fruits, with touches of earthy clove spice. The palate has earthy, savory flavours along with delicate dry tannins and a soft freshness to carry the fruit. Pairs very well with local venison complimented with elements of bacon, cloves and a stewed fruit chutney.
The vineyard was planted in 2004 on soils reminiscent of the Spanish arid, rocky soils. These soils consist of mostly Sandstone and granite parent material, extremely difficult growing conditions but where the Grenache vineyard thrives. Very little fine soil, completely dominated by rocks. With the vineyard hitting maturity in 2013/2014 season, this noted through the vineyard producing much smaller bunches and berries giving a more concentrated and mature flavour. Thus making Waterfords maiden vintage in 2014. The wine is matured in 500L old oak vats as well as in porcelain jars for 16 months. An elegant savoury expresion of 100% Grenache Noir grown in the Stellenbosch region.
