Pusole – Ogliastra, Sardinia
The artisanal, family-owned winery Pusole is located on the eastern shore of central Sardinia, in the Ogliastra region which offers a varied terrain, going from the beautiful seaside to mountains of over 1100 metres. Here, for four generations, the Pusole family has cultivated its land, producing wine, corn and olive oil, in addition to breeding a local species of semi-wild pigs called “razza sarda”. Today the family business is run by siblings Loredana, Lorenzo and Roberto. In the cellar Pusole follows a production philosophy which aims at preserving the true character of the wines, shaped by the soil and the vintage. Only indigenous yeasts are used for the fermentation, and temperatures are controlled exclusively by airing the must. After hand harvesting, the wine undergoes non-temperature controlled natural fermentation and remains unfiltered.
The Vermentino Ogliastra is both refreshing and serious with 2 days skin contact. The Karamare Ogliastra Bianco is 100% Cannonau Bianco (an ancient and rare cross of the red Cannonau and indigenous Table grape Galoppo) fermented on skins in barrel then aged in a partially full oak cask for 10 months. The Cannonau di Sardegna is 100% Cannonau (Grenache) fermented in stainless steel before aging in used oak casks for 6 months. The Cannonau di Sardegna ‘Sa Scala’ is from the 2ha vineyard of the same name of which includes some 80 year old vines and their massal offspring.
