Rugrà – Piemonte

Luigi Zucchi’s Rugrà Piemontese estate springs from a long held local family tradition for small wine production. They are located in the Monferrato hills in the Commune of Tassarolo just outside the town of Novi Ligure. The tradition became small volume commercial sales from 1992. The 4 ha estate (2 of vines) has always been farmed with the health of the soil and the environment in mind and carries organic certification. Total annual production of all wines is around 830 cases.

The Scajeta is absolutely amazing. 100% Nebbiolo from 40 year old vines, after fermentation and extended aging in stainless steel it spends 18 months in 20hl botti immediately prior to bottling. A fully formed delight that sings with developed and alluring depth and maturity of great Nebbiolo. This is high quality Barolo in everything except name – the ripe fruits swirling with the variety’s signature notes of tar and roses. Enjoy it while you can! The Merlot ‘Pruno Rosso’ is an individual, earthy, terroir driven take on this often ubiquitous variety. The Dolcetto ‘Nivo’ is produced from an indigenous, historic variety of Dolcetto from the Monferrato hills and is subjected to extended aging in stainless steel and old, large format oak.
