Founded in 1974, Avignonesi is the leading winery in the Montepulciano area of Tuscany. Its flagship wine, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, is appreciated by critics and winelovers worldwide and the winery is also renowned worldwide for the unique dessert wines Vin Santo di Montepulciano and Occhio di Pernice. Avignonesi was purchased in 2009 by Virginie Saverys, who has brought significant changes to the winery. She has worked tirelessly to convert the entire property to organic and biodynamic viticulture, with the clear goal of crafting distinct, genuine wines that fully express the singular characteristics of the Avignonesi terroir. Virginie and the team's strong belief in organic products and homeopathic medicine meant they must introduce sustainable farming mehods, by way of biodynamic principles, and today they are the largest biodynamic winery in Italy. Today, Avignonesi owns 200 hectares of vineyards spread out over the Montepulciano and Cortona appellations. All of its wines are produced with 100% estate grown grapes. Resident winemaker Matteo Giustiniani and Agronomist Alessio Gorini oversee production, and under Virginie’s guidance, Avignonesi has developed a production philosophy based on balance, elegance, brightness of fruit and a strong sense of place.

Avignonesi Vino Nobile Poggetto di Sopra 150cl 2019
13% abv
“Sweet cedar and floral tones waft up, mixing with gingery spice and hints of confectioners sugar as the single-vineyard Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Poggetto di Sopra opens in the glass. It’s soft and enveloping, with contrasting notes of sour citrus and wild berry that drench the senses, leaving purple-tinged flowers in their wake. This coats the palate in youthful concentration, both primary fruit and liquid violet tones, along with grippy tannins. There’s so much intensity and depth here, likely the result of the warm vintage; but with a few years of cellaring, the 2017 Poggetto di Sopra should find a lovely balance.” 2024 – 2030
92 Points, Eric Guido, Vinous, Dec 2021
This wine is characterised by grace and elegance. The bouquet is full and ethereal of ripe fruit and cherries in alcohol accompanied by typical nuances of the Mediterranean scrub such as lavender, thyme and wild mint. On the palate it has a very large and sweet opening. The silky tannin spreads a dense texture accompanied by a warm and lively body where notes of fresh coconut and sweet spices such as cinnamon persist.
The Alliance is a group of six Nobile producers – Salcheto, Poliziano, La Braccesca, Dei, Boscarelli, and Avignonesi – all sharing the dedication to Nobile’s rediscovery. The six winemakers have coordinated their respective work and each crafted a cru 100% Sangiovese Nobile specifically for this project. The Poggetto di Sopra brings out the characteristics of its environment, recalling the clay soil it lays upon.
Fermentation was spontaneous. Alcoholic fermentation and maceration on the skins lasted 21 days. Aged for 20 months in wooden casks (500l).
