Back in 1854, the Caryeton family bought the Château Penin estate. It was then split between growing fruits and vines. However, it didn’t take long for the family to realise that grapes were the way forward and the family now owns 40 hectares of prime Bordeaux vineyards. They work with very little oak in the winery - a bit of a departure for a Bordeaux estate - as they want the special typicity of the impact of the soils their vines are rooted into be pronounced and not muted by wood. Château Penin is run by Patrick Carteyron, the fifth generation of his family to make the wine at this 50 hectare estate in the Entre-deux-Mers in Bordeaux. Annual production is only around 20,000 cases spread across all the wines from the property. The soil is deep, between 5 to 8 metres, of predominantly gravel with large pebbles deposited by the river Gironde and, with vines of an average age of 30 years old, everything is in place to produce quality wines from this terrroir. The estate has been awarded a Level 3 HVE, the top accreditation for sustainability in the winery, vineyards and social projects.
Chateau Penin 56 – Malbec 2024
12.5% abv
Dark and brooding on the nose, full and expressive with ripe black and sweet red fruits. More lightly framed than I was expecting, juicy and filled with strawberries, herbal-edged raspberries alongside vanilla and creamy liquorice. Delicate and gentle with supple tannins and a soft tannic grip on the palate. Fruit forward with a touch of juicy sweetness and cooling minty aspects. Easy to enjoy.
Chateau Penin is based in an area that was once renowned for its Malbec. The disastrous frost of 1956 wiped out the vines in the region and the widespread replanting, especially on the right bank, saw a move away from the variety. This cuvee is a tribute to the history of the zone. Pre-fermentation maceration to extract typicity followed by gentle extraction during fermentation to emphasize finesse rather than power (infusion extraction). Aged for 12 months in concrete tanks with minimal racking to preserve the wine’s typicity and aromatics.
