CVNE ‘Imperial’ Rioja Gran Reserva – 300cl [x] 2015
14.5% abv
For the 2015 vintage release two plots were used in the locality of Torremontalvo in the Rioja Alta with an average age of vines being 40 years old.
The Gran Reserva can be seen as a wine of ‘selection’. First selection takes places in the vineyards selecting only the best bunches, the second selection takes place at the winery on the sorting tables, the third selection is then done at blending time. This selection process ensures only the very best fruit and resulting wine is selected for the Imperial Gran Reserva and that shows in the wine quality on every release, consistently getting excellent scores from the critics and with a track record of being able to age magnificently.
The 2015 is the best vintage in Rioja since the fabulous 2010 with the Wine Advocate regarding the vintage as outstanding
Josh Raynolds from Vinous gives the wine 95 points and the following note
“Deep, brilliant ruby. Offers sharply defined, mineral-inflected red and dark berries, cherry liqueur, pipe tobacco, vanilla and exotic spice scents. Chewy and penetrating in the mouth, offering concentrated black raspberry, bitter cherry, boysenberry and spicecake flavors that steadily become more lively on the back half. The strikingly persistent finish features polished tannins, repeating minerality and a touch of candied flowers.”
