Álvaro Palacios and his nephew Ricardo came to Bierzo in 1999. Their arrival brought much deserved attention to this old wine region and resulted in its revival. The sum of the Bierzo landscapes, their vegetation and diverse soils are condensed and asserted in Pétalos, a young, fragrant wine which is able to express all the hues and shades of the region. The fruit for Villa de Corullon comes exclusively from the hill of Corullon and includes exquisite vineyards of Fontelas and San Martin. Las Lamas is a single vineyard wine made from 120 year old vines that typically shows masculine power whilst Moncerbal is more feminine and scented, reflecting the silica and quartzite terroirs of this steep vineyard. La Faraona is the queen of them all, reigning at 900 m altitude and showing exquisite perfume, seductive minerality and a graceful, elegant backbone. This is a wine to keep and to treasure.

Descendientes de J Palacios Villa de Corullon 2022

“The bottled village red 2022 Corullón was produced with grapes from around 90 different plots and had a short élevage of eight months in barrel. It is 93% Mencía, 4% Jerez (Palomino), 2.5% Alicante Bouschet and 0.5% Gran Negro bottled at 13.5% alcohol. It’s floral and aromatic, but compared with the more-austere 2023, it comes through as more generous, riper and a little gentler, with more fruit but with elegance and freshness that nobody expected during the torrid summer and harvest. It keeps the freshness and poise, with fine-grained tannins. 25,392 bottles and some smaller and larger formats produced. It was bottled in August and November 2023, as they had to stop for the harvest.” 2024 – 2034

2022 Corullón already feels gorgeous from the nose. Aromas of fresh red and black fruit mingle with gloriously fragrant and lifted notes of garden thyme, wild mint and sage. The palate is just so elegant with a lovely weight of fruit yet with a focused line of slate. The cranberry fruit feels somehow concentrated yet also delicate at the same time with a blueberry lift, vibrant purity and red apple freshness. Carefully crafted, grainy tannins resolve seamlessly on the slightly savoury yet still juicy finish. This really is a delicious Corullón. Drink 2024 to 2033.
