A small estate of 7 hectares run by Sylvie Esmonin, one of a handful of leading female producers in the Cote d'Or. The estate comprises 5 hectares in Gevrey-Chambertin, with a sizeable plot of the Premier Cru Clos St-Jacques, which her grandfather bought from the original owner, the Comte de Moucheron. No herbicides have been used since 1990 and the domaine is farmed more or less organically, though not systematically so. Sylvie now tends to pick later than her father did and with lower yields. This, combined with a different oak regime in the cellar has noticeably changed the style of wine here since the turn of the millennium. The juice is allowed to start fermenting quickly, with some punching down to break up the whole bunches which are now used for the top cuvees, encouraging the sugars to ferment. Total vatting time is around two weeks, before decanting the wine into barrel, with a nicely judged proportion of new wood especially from Dominique Laurent’s cooperage. The wines are extremely stylish with typical Gevrey firmness but displaying also a silky elegance.

The 2024 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru, aged in 50% new oak, required a bit of exchange between glasses to prize open the aromatics: quite intense blackberry, blueberry and violet scents with just a hint of dark chocolate waiting in the wings. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit and traces of blood orange (not unlike Christophe Perrot-Minot’s 2024s) leading to a lightly spiced, quite strict finish that will need some bottle age.

“It is a vigneron’s vintage. I lost 80% of the crop. There are four reasons: the weather, naturally low-yielding old vines, sensitivity of Pinot Fin to mildew [although I would have thought they’d be less sensitive than Pinot Droit due to less compact bunches?] and being organic. I picked from September 20 to 25. The clement weather in September helped the grapes ripen and I only had to chaptalise by half a degree. I used a vibrating table to remove dried berries and used no new oak or whole bunch. I found that there was a difference between the regular Gevrey Village and the Vieilles Vignes, so I kept them separate.”
