Giuseppe Cortese Barbaresco Rabaja Riserva 2016

14.5% abv

Vol- 75cl

This wine is a selection from a small part of Rabajà and is only made in the best, classic years. It has considerable structure and elegance, and great capacity for evolution.

The winery’s signature wine; produced exclusively in the most classic vintages. A top quality expression of the Nebbiolo variety from the Rabajà vineyard, in terms of its complexity and longevity.

Vinification: around 35 days of fermentation in stainless steel and old cement tanks.
Ageing: 40 months in Slavonian oak barrels ranging in size of 17 to 25 hectolitres and in age of 30/32 years. Minimum 3 years of maturing in the bottle before being released for sale.

“The 2016 Barbaresco Riserva Rabajà is stellar. Just starting to open aromatically, the 2016 is superb in this tasting. Sweet macerated cherry, spice, new leather, tobacco and dried herbs all grace the 2016 with notable aromatic complexity. As always, the Riserva is an ethereal, engaging wine with less immediacy and mid-palate than the other Barbarescos here, but in exchange tons of nuance. This is the best showing yet for the 2016, a wine that satisfies both the hedonistic and intellectual senses.” 2024 – 2041

“The Giuseppe Cortese 2016 Barbaresco Riserva Rabajà is a late release and one I am sure this winery is quite happy to see go to market given the hype surrounding this excellent vintage. There is a very pretty smoothness here, both in terms of the aromatic delivery and the mouthfeel, which shows how nicely Nebbiolo can reach balance. The bouquet is lithe and delicate with wild berry, crushed rose petal, white licorice and campfire ash. Some 6,000 bottles were made. Great job.” 2023 – 2040

The story of the winery is the story of a family that has been protecting and enhancing Barbaresco since 1971 And for anyone with just a passing knowledge of the wines from the area, they will recognise the estate as one of the greatest in the region.
The family winegrowing tradition is now carried on by Giuseppe’s children, Pier Carlo, Tiziana, and son-in-law Gabriele, who look ahead with the determination that has always been the Cortese family’s most distinguishing feature. Attentive, rigorous care of the estate’s vineyards, strict selection, a traditional approach to vinification, and a gentle hand with modern techniques are the ingredients that define the unmistakable personality and unique flavours of Cortese’s wines
The family lives in the hamlet of Rabaja, most famous cru in Barbaresco. This steep, amphitheater is home to some of the greatest Barbaresco ever made and is undoubtedly of "Grand Cru" status. They're the biggest owners with 9 hectares.

'Actually, for most people, it’s the single greatest Barbaresco vineyard of all: to put this statement into better perspective for you, consider that if we were to list together all of Barbaresco’s and Barolo’s vineyards together, Rabajà would still make it in the top five. That’s how good it is. And the Giuseppe Cortese estate happens to be the biggest landowner of Rabajà.' Ian d'Agata
