Piedra Fluida Magec 2023

13% abv

Vol- 75cl

A cheerful vin de soif with crunchy berry and forest fruit notes, gracefully light on the palate from the white grape aromatics but with great structure given from the old vines and good tannin. A blend of the local Listan Negro red grape co-fermented white Listan Blanco (Palomino).

The fires that affected Tenerife in August 2023 were the worst on the island in 40 years..The fire started in the southern part of Mount Teide and spread to the north with over 15,000 ha of forest burning. In addition to the issues of burned vineyards and smoke taint, the fire, in combination with the extreme climactic conditions of 2023, advanced the harvest on Tenerife impacting the fruit that could be rescued.

What do you do…

The 2023 harvest in Tenerife has been marked by a large forest fire very close to the Santa Úrsula vineyards. This fire forced the harvest to be delayed, since during the most critical phase it was not possible to access the winery nor the vineyards due to the proximity of the fire. For this reason, the winery this year decided to produce a small part of the red production, collecting only the most select from each plot, which was mixed with grapes from the southern vineyards, which were not affected by the fire. Given Piedra Fluida’s deep commitment with the island, the winery is contributing to the recovery of the island’s forest by donating 1€ of each sold bottle for the replanting of trees in the forests of Tenerife.

A blend of Listán negro and Listán Blanco. From the wineries plots in Pago del Cantillo in the municipality of Santa Úrsula, in the north of Tenerife, and from Granadilla de Abona in the South of Tenerife. Whole bunch (carbonic maceration) of reds from the North. From the South (red & white); destemmed (not crushed) and co-fermented in stainless steel. Blend matured in 5000 litre oak vats for four months.

660 cases produced – this was the total production of the wiinery in 2023. An average year yields over 3300 cases across all wines.

The Piedra Fluida project came into being with the aim of being a guardian of biodiversity After starting to purchase spectacular vineyards in 2016 and after hard work recuperating and protecting them, the first limited vintage was released in 2018. It is a core part of founder, Mr. Felix Becker's, strategy to protect and strengthen the conservation of the natural environment and generate economic development in the Canary Islands. This encompasses agricultural production, organic products, livestock production, restoration, ecotourism real estate and organic wine production. 26 hectares of ancient, high altitude, un-grafted vines stretching up to the highest vineyards in Europe at 1687 metres. The indigenous red grape, Lista Negro, is planted on the northern slopes of Mount Teide with the whites, made from Listan Blanco, the local name for Palomino, planted in the drier, higher Southern side. Vineyards are tended in the ancestral way - by hand and animal - with no machine access possible to these old parcels and terroirs. Managing the winery is the oenologist Gabriel Morales, native from Tenerife with more than 20 years’ experience and a true expert in viticulture in the Canary Islands & working with unique native varieties there. The wine making is managed by the very talented oenologist Loreto Pancorbo, originally form Rioja with experience making wines in Napa Valley, New Zealand and Rioja, now 2nd year MW candidate.
