This unique site of Pyramid Valley Estate calls is home to some of the most profound Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines in the world. Biodynamic viticulture and a natural approach to winemaking create handcrafted wine that breathes of its place and tastes like nowhere else on earth. The story started with Mike and Claudia Elze Weersing spending 15 years searching the world to find the perfect place to grow grapes. In 2000, they purchased this plot of land near Waikari and went on to create remarkable wines for close to 20 years that have been recognised the world over. Fast-forward to 2017, when good friends Steve Smith MW and Brian Sheth realised their long-held vision of creating a wine dream together. That dream was to craft impeccable wines and inspiring experiences they could share. Steve and Brian were honoured to take on the legacy of Pyramid Valley and craft their own family of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines. Estate Manager and Winemaker Huw Kinch has guided this new chapter of Pyramid Valley since 2018. After 10 years crafting Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in Martinborough, Huw made the move south to explore a new expression of these varieties. Pyramid Valley North Canterbury Sauvignon Blanc + 2021
13% abv
Bright lemon hue to the wine. An expressively interesting aroma of white flowers, citrus and ripe tropical summer fruits. The palate is focused and concentrated showing ripe fruits and citrus characters with an attractive texture and balanced acidity.
“The 2021 Sauvignon + North Canterbury is so named because it isn’t just Sauvignon Blanc; there’s a touch of barrel-fermented Pinot Gris here too. What’s more, 7% of the Sauvignon was fermented on skins in clay amphorae, the remainder in both tanks and barrels. The result is a dry, textural white with a rich midpalate. It’s a delightful apple- and elderflower-scented expression. You’ll also find some floral notes, perhaps due to the skin contact and citrusy acidity. Pretty and finely detailed.” 2022 – 2028
