Quinta dos Carvalhais played a key role in the quality revival of Dão wines in the early 1990s and continues to produce some of the region’s finest expressions. After being acquired by Sogrape in 1988, the estate underwent major vineyard and winery upgrades, including the replanting of near-extinct Dão varieties such as Encruzado, now celebrated as one of Portugal’s premier grapes. Winemaker Beatriz Cabral de Almeida champions these indigenous varieties, crafting estate wines of depth, vibrant fruit and refined elegance. The estate’s 50 hectares sit between 465–500 metres above sea level, with granite soils and a climate of warm days and cool nights fostering ripe, balanced grapes. White indigenous varieties are matched to specific plots, and sustainable viticulture practices, including sheep grazing, enhance soil health while minimising herbicide use. The gravity-flow winery, equipped with small stainless-steel tanks, allows each plot to be vinified separately. True to Dão style, all wines see oak ageing, with careful use of new and seasoned barrels to subtly integrate oak influence.

Pear, peach and quince with hints of cedar and pine. Rich and concentrated, balanced by fresh acidity and a long, elegant finish.
The Branco Reserva is a blend of Encruzado and Gouveio aged for 18 months in used French oak. It balances the fruit freshness of both varieties with a savoury complexity derived from time in barrel.
