Hailing from Vredendal originally, Sakkie Mouton was born and bred up the west coast and went to school locally there before moving to Elsenburg college to study winemaking. This land lies over 3 hours north of Cape Town. Coastel plains - as Sakkie describes them "so flat you can watch your dog run away for hours". Amongst the many vines planted here ,mostly hard working vineyards destined for cooperatives, he has adopted some older small parcels of exquisite personality. Sakkie Mouton is the epitome of the classic West Coast maverick or perhaps the West Coast misfit to use his own words. But whatever descriptives you use to describe his unique brand of winemaking and marketing, there is no denying this young man’s incredible talent, passion and vision. Almost uniquely, despite his enviable and obvious rock star talents, he has never been too confident or arrogant to dismiss advice or unwilling to alter course in the name of producing the very best possible end product.

Sakkie Mouton Dawn of the Salty Tongues Syrah 2023
12.9% abv
Nose: graphite, red cherries, red meat, Kelp. On the mouth there is an intense sensation of saltiness with a dark Cherry and saline Finish.
The Salty Tongues Syrah is a 100% Syrah red wine from vines located 25 kilometres from the cold Atlantic ocean, in Vredendal, Olifantsriver on the West Coast of South Africa. The Label is a reference to the Rise of the West Coast as a new wine region and showcases divers picking grapes under the ocean, which contributes to the ‘’salty’’ taste on the palette. Grapes were picked early in the morning to preserve freshness. Cooled down before being destemmed. 30% whole bunches into open fermenters the next morning.
Fermentation started after three days of cold soaking and lasted for about two weeks with pumpovers three times a day, fermentation temperature was kept at 27°C. After fermentation the wine was racked to one 500 litre and one 300litre barrel for aging. Aging in barrel was done for 11 months.
Bottled with the addition of a little sulphur, unfined and unfiltered. Vineyards – Decomposed Sandstone soils 25 kilometres from the Atlantic ocean, planted in 1999.
