Soumah of the Yarra Valley Hexham Late Harvest Viognier 50cl 2024

11% abv

Vol- 50cl

This dessert wine has luscious aromas of classic viognier varietal apricots and candied ginger. While it is sweet on the palate, the fine line of mineral acidity keeps the finish fresh and elegant. It’s unctuous and sweet in the mouth yet not remotely heavy, finishing honeyed and long.

The 2024 vintage was a drier and warmer winter, temperatures recording one-degree higher than typical. The team at Soumah were therefore thinking ‘El Nino’ and drought. Then came 75% more rainfall than normal from October through January with the ensuring summer temperatures a degree lower than typical! They had some settled weather around early November, which allowed a great flowering and fruit set, laying the foundation for good yields. The overall cooler temperatures in summer produced excellent acidity which set up for minimal intervention ferments and wines of great length and structure. No longer affected by Botrytis, this wine is now late harvest.

Pair with Victoria sponge all day long. Salted caramel Affogato is also a winner, and also great with soft cheese.

Soumah of the Yarra Valley is a producer of fine wines from the region. A hidden gem located down a country lane, in the dress circle of the cool Warramate foothills of Gruyere. Soumah set out to make wine with the charm of northern Italy but the provenance of the Yarra Valley. Situated an average of 120 metres above sea level, the vineyard is elevated above the valley floor. The ancient sandy-clay loams with broken sandstone shape the small yield and define the detail in these precise, focussed expressions of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
