Taylor’s Vintage Port 2003

20% abv

Vol- 75cl

Rich purple, red in colour, with a vibrant rim. A nose of great purity opening on a note of lovely floral, aromatic blueberry and blackberry. The palate is concentrated with beautifully pure sweet fruit and a lovely spicy, savoury, silky tannic structure. Rock rose and violets, liquorice, black cherries and plums resonate in the mid palate leading to an interminable finish of rich, dark chocolate, kirsch and blackcurrants. Still armed with exceptional power, depth and purity of fruit, this seductive vintage port with its characteristic Taylor understatement and restraint is still very youthful, with decades of potential ahead.

“David Guimaraens is a huge fan of 2003s, saying they are in the shadow of the 2000s the way 1966 was in the shadow of the 1963s, but ‘when you have a warm year following a cool year, the wines have incredible longevity’. But he is not thinking of touching them yet. Very subtle nose indeed, and to me, someone without unlimited access to vintage ports(!), this seems pretty delicious now. Yes, there is lots of tannin but also lots of very charming pruney fruit. Exciting with sufficient freshness as well as sweetness and interest.”

Nestled among the lodges and cellars of Oporto, Taylor’s is one of the oldest of the founding Port Houses. Dating from 1692, the House quickly realised that the more muscular wines of the upper Douro Valley greater suited the British taste, and ventured into previously uncultivated areas to seek out vineyard sites.
