The Ornellaia estate was first the creation of Ludovico Antinori. His desire to set his own standards apart from the family firm had led him to the Tuscan Coast at Bolgheri, adjacent to his cousin Nicolo Incia's Tenuta San Guido of Sassicaia. The combination of soil and man made this one of the pre-eminent modern wineries of Italian fine wine. The turn of the century saw the estate move into the ownenrship of that other Tuscan royal wine family, Frescobaldi, following a short period of joint ownership with California's Mondavi. The Bordeaux influenced wines of the estate are icons of International Styled Italian wine.

Tenuta del Ornellaia Ornellaia – La Generosita 2021

This year ‘La Generosità’ has been chosen to describe the character of the sensational year that is the 2021 vintage. A much anticipated release, especially after Bolgheri´ s 5-star vintage rating. Marco Balsimelli, Estate Director at Ornellaia, notes the 2021 vintage is “a very expressive and complex wine, with all the hallmarks of one of the great vintages from Ornellaia.”
The 2021 Ornellaia captures all the magic of this sensational vintage on the Tuscan Coast. Rich, ample and expansive, with tremendous polish, the 2021 is pure class. Dark-toned fruit, mocha, espresso, licorice, plum and dried herbs abound. The tannins are present but also beautifully integrated, as is the French oak. There was a time not too long ago when young wines here needed years in bottle to drink well. That’s not at all the case with the 2021.
Antonio Galloni, VINOUS, 99pts
‘The Ornellaia 2021 Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia offers an extra layer of richness, generosity and plushness that shapes a very open-knit and exuberant Tuscan red. The blend is 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 7% Petit Verdot. You feel the fruit and oak weight of the wine, the extract and the 15% alcohol content. All of these elements come together to big effect. From that power, you get black cherry, dark fruit, sweet spice and barbecue smoke. The fruit tannins are young, and this edition of Ornellaia proves worthy of medium or long-term drinking as it softens up with more bottle age.’

WINEMAKER’S TASTING NOTES
‘Made from 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 7% Petit Verdot, the unique combination of fruit intensity, bright acidity and a fleshy tannic structure, makes it a truly memorable wine and one with great ageing potential.’
