Based on the L’Ormarins estate in Franschoek the Anthonij Rupert estate is fast becoming one of the most impressive and innovative wineries in South Africa. Fruit comes from four vineyard properties in Franschoek itself, Elandskloof, Riebeeksrivier and Darling. Johan Rupert has built one of the most driven and talented teams in the industry and the result is a suitable memorial to Johan’s late brother Anthonij. In 1984 Anthonij, having taken over the running of L’Ormarins from his father restored the Manor House (Built in 1811) and the Historic Cellar (dating back to 1799), which were both declared national monuments. In 1989 L’Ormarins won every major local wine competition. While tragically in 2001, Anthonij Rupert passes away. In 2003 Johann Rupert takes over L’Ormarins. In 2005 he builds the Anthonij Rupert Cellar. A state of the art, gravity fed cellar with revolving ceiling and underground barrel cellar completed in memory of his brother. That same year he employs internationally acclaimed oenologist, Michel Rolland, as a consultant to the Anthonij Rupert team, resulting in the first vintage of Anthonij Rupert wines released in 2009. Since the maiden 2005 vintage completed in this cellar, all wines in the range including Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Syrah and ‘The Blend’ have consistently scored 90 points and more for every vintage judged by Wine Spectator.
Anthonij Rupert Cape of Good Hope Altima Sauvignon Blanc 2024
13% abv
A gentle, nuanced nose of fig leaf and granadilla with a light brush of citrus, grass and flint. The palate is rounded, expressive and gentle rather than typically tangy and acidic. There’s freshness and succulence in abundance but it’s soft and textured with lime leaf, lemon zest and white pepper.
From a steep terraced vineyard Situated in the isolated Elandskloof Valley just North of Villiersdorp, Altima was purchased from the Overnstone Family in 2008. It is 5km wide and surrounded by a steep mountain range rising 1km from the valley floor. Planted from 600m above sea-level, with the highest vineyard planted at 878m. The steep topography causes the valley to receive less direct sunlight, making for a distinct cool climate style.
