Based on the L’Ormarins estate in Franschoek the Anthonij Rupert estate is fast becoming one of the most impressive and innovative wineries in South Africa. Fruit comes from four vineyard properties in Franschoek itself, Elandskloof, Riebeeksrivier and Darling. Johan Rupert has built one of the most driven and talented teams in the industry and the result is a suitable memorial to Johan’s late brother Anthonij. In 1984 Anthonij, having taken over the running of L’Ormarins from his father restored the Manor House (Built in 1811) and the Historic Cellar (dating back to 1799), which were both declared national monuments. In 1989 L’Ormarins won every major local wine competition. While tragically in 2001, Anthonij Rupert passes away. In 2003 Johann Rupert takes over L’Ormarins. In 2005 he builds the Anthonij Rupert Cellar. A state of the art, gravity fed cellar with revolving ceiling and underground barrel cellar completed in memory of his brother. That same year he employs internationally acclaimed oenologist, Michel Rolland, as a consultant to the Anthonij Rupert team, resulting in the first vintage of Anthonij Rupert wines released in 2009. Since the maiden 2005 vintage completed in this cellar, all wines in the range including Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Syrah and ‘The Blend’ have consistently scored 90 points and more for every vintage judged by Wine Spectator.
Anthonij Rupert L’Ormarins Blanc de Blancs 2020
12.5% abv
Toasty notes support the nectarine, apricot and peach aromas on the bouquet. Complexity added by a preserved lemon nuance. Expressive but taut. The palate is rich, rounded and bold with the oak immediately apparent – but not overwhelming the ripe stonefruit elements of apricot, nectarine and peach which remain pure, and well delineated. Ample acidity to ensure crisp refreshment on this full-bodied wine. An intriguing mandarin twist adds interest to this obviously serious wine. Elegant and serious with a long finish.
50 year old Chardonnay vines, dry farmed at altitude – .Elandskloof 85 % and Groenekloof 15% The Chardonnay grapes are hand-picked early in the morning and whole-bunch pressed. The free run and press components are always kept separate. The juice is then settled and inoculated with yeast for fermentation. Before blending, approximately 15% of the Blanc de Blanc is barrel-fermented and matured for 12 weeks. After that, the base wine is blended and filtered. The chardonnay is bottled for secondary fermentation, and the wines are kept at 13 to 15 degrees Celsius. The bottles are aged for four years on the lees, disgorged and matured for an additional eight months before release.
