The Ardbeg distillery lies on the South shore of Islay, close to the other 'Kildalton' distilleries (Lagavulin and Laphroaig). The name Ardbeg comes from the Gaelic word 'ad bheag' for small hill. The malt is peated to an average of 55ppm at Port Ellen Maltings which gives the smoke, long fermentation times help to increase softness and impart fruity acidity. Both stills have quite a tall neck and are constricted just above the neck of the pot still. The lyne arm is also rising after the bend. All these factors result in a stable distillation with a lot of reflux which gives an oily, textural quality to the final product but also helps to refine the spirit.

What if we dared to remove the purifier?
What is a purifier?
A small copper pot on the underside of the lyne arm between the still and the condenser.
What does it physically allow?
It captures the heaviest vapours rising up the still into the lyne arm, allowing them to fall into the purifier pot and condensing back into liquid. We call that “reflux” when the vapour condenses back to liquid inside the still.
What is the effect on the spirit?
The purifier allows this additional ‘reflux’ of super heavily peated spirit and means that Ardbeg is not just “all peat” but gets a supremely balanced taste. An harmony of the fruits, the herbal & floral flavours and the peat, allowing Ardbeg the be the most complex of all the Islay malts…
The purifier makes Ardbeg… Ardbeg!
But what if we removed the purifier?
