Founded in 1982, Au Bon Climat produces internationally-recognized Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from grapes grown in California's Santa Barbara County. Located at the foot of one of California's most highly rated vineyards, Bien Nacido in the Santa Maria Valley, one of the finest sites in California, ideal for the production of the refined, Burgundian style of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. ABC, as it is more commonly referred to, has won universal acclaim for its wines thanks to late owner & winemaker Jim 'Wild Boy' Clendenen. They purchased clones of Pinot Noir from Burgundy in a bid to replicate as closely as possible the restraint and finesse of the wines from the region. Now Isabella and Knox Clendenen continue their father Jim's legacy, treating Burgundy as the benchmark with General Manager Jim Adelman continuin his 30 year tenure overseeing the winemaking. Jim eschewed a career in law for the lure of the vine following a month's stay in Burgundy and Champagne when he was 21 and never looked back. The wines combine the mineral precision and grace of Burgundy with the flair of the West Coast.
Au Bon Climat La Bauge Au-dessus Pinot Noir 2021
13.5% abv
“The 2021 Pinot Noir La Bauge Au-Dessus, all from Bien Nacido, is a pretty, ethereal wine with a good bit of stem inclusion and notable overall savoriness. Medium in body, silky and approachable, the Bauge is an attractive mid-tier wine in this range that shows plenty of the house style.” 2024 – 2031

“La Bauge” is a classic Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir. It is a wine of great aromatics and character showing cherry/cranberry fruit, rose petal, earth and spice. It has a lavish structure and rich wood scents. The key word is balance. A balance of oak and fruit, a balance of tannin and acid, and a balance elegance and intensity.
La Bauge Au-dessus translates as a “wild party up stairs”. The original bottlings were from the hillsides of Bien Nacido Vineyard. The quality of Le Bon Climat vineyard Pinot Noir was apparent within the first three years, so some of the better lots from both vineyards are blended each year to create another year of the “wild party up stairs”. The “La Bauge” Pinots have the distinctive regional fruit character but with a more integrated structure and suppleness early on, making it enjoyable now, though it will continue to improve
WINEMAKER NOTES
As with all our Pinot Noirs, we are “hands-on”. Every Pinot Noir is fermented in 5 ton open-top fermenters, which are punched down once or twice a day. These punch downs breakup the cap of skins that rises to the surface back into the juice so the fermentation process extracts the best part of the Pinot grapes. The wine is pressed to complete dryness and goes to barrel with moderate lees. Our “La Bauge” Pinot Noir is aged in 50% new French oak barrels made by the cooper Francois Freres in the heart of Burgundy in the small village of St. Romain. The wine was carefully racked in the spring and then aged another 20 months (24 months total). It was lightly fined with 4 egg whites per barrel, and then bottled unfiltered.
