Au Bon Climat Larmes des Grappes Pinot Noir – Sanford & Benedict – Santa Rita Hills 2019

13.5% abv

Vol- 75cl

Supple and racy in the glass, with terrific depth and balance. Perfumed floral, spice and savory notes emerge from beneath fruit that suggests red cherry, plum, rose petal, mint and blood orange.

Our Larmes de Grappe (tears of the grape) wines are something special. It doesn’t happen every vintage. In fact, there are only five other vintages that have been made since 2001. The grapes need to be perfectly ripe and the stems lignified. Only the best grapes using our best barrels make a few cases of this Pinot Noir when it is warranted. The grapes are from the old vine Pinot Noir from the prestigious Sanford and Benedict Vineyard planted in the 70s. We wait to pick until the stems have lignified and then ferment whole cluster without any destemming. In 2019 it came from the legendary Sanford and Benedict Vineyard, one of the first vineyards in Santa Barbara County and one of the greatest in America.

Founded in 1982, Au Bon Climat produces internationally-recognized Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from grapes grown in California's Santa Barbara County.

Located at the foot of one of California's most highly rated vineyards, Bien Nacido in the Santa Maria Valley, one of the finest sites in California, ideal for the production of the refined, Burgundian style of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. ABC, as it is more commonly referred to, has won universal acclaim for its wines thanks to late owner & winemaker Jim 'Wild Boy' Clendenen. They continue Jim's legacy, treating Burgundy as the benchmark. They purchased clones of Pinot Noir from Burgundy in a bid to replicate as closely as possible the restraint and finesse of the wines from the region.

Jim eschewed a career in law for the lure of the vine following a month's stay in Burgundy and Champagne when he was 21 and never looked back. The wines combine the mineral precision and grace of Burgundy with the flair of the West Coast.
