Originally founded under the name of Glen Gordon, The Balvenie is the second distillery built by William Grant (after Glenfiddich). When the Balvenie distillery was built in 1892, it was outfitted with second hand stills from the Lagavulin and Glen Albyn distilleries. This was one of the first distilleries to introduce a ‘finished’ single malt with the launch of 'Double Wood' in 1993, which was first aged in ex-Bourbon casks before being given a short period of secondary maturation in ex-sherry - a practice that is now commonplace in the industry.
Balvenie 12 Year Old ‘Double Wood’
40% abv
The Balvenie DoubleWood is a 12 year old single malt which gains its distinctive character from being matured in two wood types. Over the period of maturation it is transferred from a traditional oak whisky cask to a first fill European oak sherry cask. Each stage lends different qualities to the resulting single malt ~ the traditional casks soften and add character, whilst the sherry wood brings depth and fullness of flavour.. On the nose it has sweet scents of honey and vanilla followed by aromas of spiced fruits from the sherry cask. On the palate it is smooth and mellow, with Beautifully combined nutty sweetness with cinamon spiciness and a delicate sherry touch. Combine this with its long, fruity and warming finish and you have yourself a delicious whisky.
