Boekenhoutskloof was established in 1776. Located in the furthest corner of the beautiful Franschhoek valley, the farm’s name means “ravine of the Boekenhout” (pronounced Book-n-Howed). Boekenhout is an indigenous Cape Beech tree greatly prized for furniture making. In 1993 the farm and homestead was bought and restored and a new vineyard planting programme was established that now includes Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Grenache, Semillon and Viognier.
Boekenhoutskloof Franschhoek Syrah 2002
14.5% abv
Sourced from a single vineyard on Schalk Burger’s Welbedacht farm in Wellington since 1998. The SH-21 clone was planted there in 1993 on a south-east-facing slope to maximise the cooling effect of the prevailing easterly wind. Decomposed granite soils. Partially destemmed and spontaneously fermented in old 5,000-litre, open-top wooden vat, with soft délestage 2–3 times a day. Matured for 18 months in used barriques before fining, returned to the casks for a further 9 months. TA 6.1 g/l, pH 3.75, RS 2.1 g/l.
Founder-winemaker Marc Kent describes this as a difficult vintage but one that produced this Syrah, one of his favourite wines among all those he has produced. Bricky garnet. There was some bottle variation here and the first one was not that impressive (rather old and very mushroomy) but the second bottle was quite different: perfumed with violets, a little meaty but it is the elegant perfume that sings and there’s terrific freshness. Bottle-refined tannins. Still has so much fruit depth even though the flavours are all tertiary. A vibrant, aged richness. (JH) Jancis Robinson. Drink 2007–2027
