The story starts in 1972 and Paul Boutinot, having had a brief flirtation with shifting half a tonne of bricks up and down a ladder, decided the glamour of the building industry wasn’t for him.Paul quickly got into something else: wine. After five years learning his trade in London, he headed back up north to Greater Manchester to join his father’s successful restaurant business. Frustrated with the quality of wine that could be sourced in the UK, Paul took matters into his own hands. He hired a van, trundled over to France, picked up some wine (it was legal back then) and sold it back in his parents’ restaurant. Personally selecting the wines from France, back in the UK he would unload the trailer by hand and deliver the crates of wines to customers himself. But good things grow and by the end of the decade they had become a bigger and better company. A company that not only sought out great wines but made them too. Today, Boutinot Wines is one of the leading UK-based distributors of quality wines from around the world. The portfolio consists of over 1600 wines and more than 44 million bottles are sold each year.
Boutinot Fleurie La Madone La Reine De L’Arenite 2024
12.5% abv
Very pretty indeed, a heady perfume of freshly picked irises and peonies drifts above the crushed berry fruit nose. Ripe tannins and fresh acidity support a palate of Morello cherries, strawberries with wonderfully elegant finish.
La Reine de l’Arenite, meaning ‘Queen of the Arenite’, refers to the terroir of pinky, crumbly sandstone of the La Madone vineyards, rated as one of the best vineyards in Fleurie. At up to 450m altitude and with soils still untouched by phylloxera, goblet trained vines on the east and south east facing vineyards lie below the Chapel of the Madonna at the top of the hill. Gamay Noir vines range from 40 to 90 years of age. Grapes are hand-picked and whole-berry fermented for 8-10 days (traditional maceration carbonique) followed by a further two or three days on the skins to assist with aromas. No use of cultured yeasts. Pressed after an 8-10 day cuvaison. First press wine was returned to vat and left for eight months before bottling.
In winter, match with a roast leg of lamb. During the summer, chill lightly and serve with roasted or barbecued chicken or pork.
