The story starts in 1972 and Paul Boutinot, having had a brief flirtation with shifting half a tonne of bricks up and down a ladder, decided the glamour of the building industry wasn’t for him.Paul quickly got into something else: wine. After five years learning his trade in London, he headed back up north to Greater Manchester to join his father’s successful restaurant business. Frustrated with the quality of wine that could be sourced in the UK, Paul took matters into his own hands. He hired a van, trundled over to France, picked up some wine (it was legal back then) and sold it back in his parents’ restaurant. Personally selecting the wines from France, back in the UK he would unload the trailer by hand and deliver the crates of wines to customers himself. But good things grow and by the end of the decade they had become a bigger and better company. A company that not only sought out great wines but made them too. Today, Boutinot Wines is one of the leading UK-based distributors of quality wines from around the world. The portfolio consists of over 1600 wines and more than 44 million bottles are sold each year.
Boutinot Here & There Malbec 2025
14% abv
‘South Africa famously produces wines that are great value for money and Boutinot’s own Cape range seems crazily inexpensive, even by those standards. This one, from Swartland, is the definitive crowd pleaser, with its bright red fruit and spicy seasoning. There’s depth and complexity for those that take time to look for it but really this is all about pleasure.’ The Wine Merchant magazine, May 2023.
Warm and open on the nose with invitingly ripe redcurrant and raspberry fruit and a hint of spice. Juicy and approachable on the palate with a core of gentle red berry fruit nicely balanced by fresh acidity and a rounded, supple finish. A versatile style which goes well with a variety of food such as vegetable lasagne, pizzas or pasta.
From selected vineyards on Swartland’s granite-rich, alluvial soils which produce low yields of small concentrated berries. Hand picked and naturally fermented in stainless steel tanks. 30 % whole bunch, 70 % whole berry fermented to add complexity and tannin structure. Pump overs done once daily during fermentation. With fermentation done, wine is pressed and returned to tank for Malolactic fermentation. 15% spends a few months in older 300 litre barrels.
