This is a new winery owned by UK importers Andy & Ali McLeod who have slowly been buying vineyards with old vines of native grapes. Their aim is to produce low volume hand made wines that capture the best of Terra Alta, a region of much potential that has for too long been dominated by uninteresting cooperatives. Located about 30 mins ot the west of Priorat this is Catalunya's most remote DO- on the right bank of the river Ebro, between the towering mountains of Pàndols Cavalls and Els Ports and the border with Aragón.
Winemaking is under the supervision of Andrew Halliwell, who has made wine on five continents and brings a wealth of experience to the team.
Celler Alimara Llumi Rosat 2021
13.5% abv
The gorgeous lively colour reveals a mixed fresh and stewed strawberry core with hints of Valencia orange and candied fruits. 100% Garnacha from inland Catalunya. The grapes were hand picked before chilling to 2°C. After passing over a selection table, the grapes were destemmed and crushed, then held in the press for 4 hours to pick up colour. After a gentle pressing the resulting pink juice underwent a controlled fermentation at 16°C.
Llumí, which means “Match” in Catalan, is a range of wines that give an excellent introduction to the Celler Alimara philosophy. They are small volume, hand made examples of a food friendly, fruit forward style of winemaking. Designed to be enjoyed without pretension, they nevertheless ooze quality and will satisfy everyone from the casual to the more seasoned drinker.
