Jean-Christophe Barbe, Professor of Oenology at Bordeaux University, is mostly famous for his outstanding Sauternes, but also produces some stunning reds, albeit on a fairly small scale. The Château Mouras Graves comes from a six hectare property that lies in the Graves communes of Portets, Illats and Landiras.
Chateau Mouras Graves 2018
14.5% abv
Deep ruby in colour with violet hues, this wine has a complex and aromatic nose of red berry and blackberry fruits, mingled with spices and a touch of cedar wood. On the palate there is a supple texture with an attractive mineral character that defines the appellation of Graves. Dark fruit and spice dominate the midpalate providing excellent depth that is supported by ripe, smooth tannins. 60% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Petit Verdot.
2018 was a good vintage. A wet spring allowed the soils to build up good water reserves, which were needed throughout the favourable weather in summer and autumn towards the time of harvest. These conditions allowed for a complete maturation of the grapes, including late-ripening variety Petit Verdot, meaning that the berries harvested had developed rich aromatics and were in optimum health. The grapes were hand-picked then spent nearly four weeks on their skins at 28°C – 30°C. The wine underwent malolactic fermentation at 22°C and was then aged for 12 months in oak barrels.
