An award-winning family-run estate in the high foothills of the Pyrenees in the South of France, making fine, hand-crafted white and sparkling wines. Rives-Blanques lies surrounded by woodland in a Natura 2000 reserve, protected by Europe for its unique combination of Mediterranean and Atlantic flora and fauna. These are the influences that lend both fruit and finesse to their wines: passion and fruit from the Mediterranean and the cool elegance from the Atlantic. The vineyard is on a plateau 350 high in the foothills of the Pyrenees. The same quartz that lies on the top of the peak Rives Blanques, after which the vineyard is named, also lies scattered amongst the vines.
Chateau Rives-Blanques Blanquette de Limoux Brut Nature 2023
12% abv
“Organic viticulture although not yet certified. Made 100% from the old historic grape variety of the region Mauzac, from two vineyards: 90% from Le Jardin, 55- to 80-year-old ‘uncloned’ bush vines, and 10% from Blaise, 10-year-old cordon-royat vines. 350–380 m above sea level on pebble-rich sandstone and marl. Cool fermented in stainless steel and then second fermentation in bottle, 24 months on lees. Zero dosage, no added sulphites at disgorgement. TA 4.3 g/l, pH 3.03, RS 0 g/l, pressure 6.7 bar.
Mauzac is that sibling in the family who gets characterised, boxed and labelled aged three and is never allowed to be anything else in the family’s collective perception – even if that sibling grows up to become someone completely different. Mauzac, we’re told, is rustic and light and tastes of dried apple skins and grassiness. What if Mauzac tastes of samphire and kombu steeped in mussels and white wine and lemon peel? What if Mauzac tastes of sea cliffs covered in blue-black shining shells and thick, glistening, green sea moss? What if Mauzac tastes like hay drenched in salt spray and green-olive brine? What if Mauzac, Blanquette, tastes like a Daphne du Maurier novel losing its pages in the wind on a cold pebbled beach under an iron sky? Could we reverse out from the cul-de-sac of our boxed-in beliefs and consider Mauzac with a wide-sky mind? Close your eyes and taste this wine… (TC)”
