Paul Avril’s estate Clos du Papes is Rhône royalty and the wines produced here have a unique elegance and piercing aromatic expression that earns them a legendary reputation. Production is modern but eschews the use of new oak or filtering of any kind and, perhaps most importantly no super priced super cuvées – all the best fruit and wine making energy goes into creating the single sublime wine that has been produced here for over a century.

Clos des Papes Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc 2021
14% abv
Le Clos des Papes Blanc is a blend of Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, Clairette, Bourboulenc and Picpoul . Le Clos des Papes Blanc represents 10% of the estate’s total production. The whole bunches from all the grape varieties are assembled and then pressed. Malolactic fermentation is not carried out and the wine is aged on fine lees in stainless steel vats.
“White peaches, honeysuckle, licorice, pomelo, orange rind, spice and white flowers create the perfume. The wine is sweet, lush, fresh and fruity, with lift, energy and a touch of salt on the backend. The wine is a complex blend of all 6 allowable, co-fermented, white wine grape varieties. The wine was produced from yields of 18 hectoliters per hectare, due to frost. Drink from 2023-2031.” Jeff Leve, The Wine Cellar Insider. Tasted: Jan 2024
