Established in 1824 by Sir Alexander Ramsay, Fettercairn distillery lies just south of Aberdeen and east of the Cairngorms National Park. In 1830 Sir Alexander sold his estate to Sir John Gladstone, father of the future British Prime Minister, William Ewart Gladstone, and the distillery was included in the deal. This may have been one of the most important passing of ownership in whisky's history. As Prime Minister he would not only legalise the selling of bottled whisky to the public, but also scrap the Malt Tax. Fettercairn boasts a unique feature in the shape of self-cooling spirit stills, where cold water flows externally down the still necks. This, in turn, increases reflux and creates a lighter spirit.
