Flametree Chardonnay 2019
13.2% abv
A mixture of clean and turbid juices were wild fermented in French oak puncheons and barriques using only free run juice. Ferment temperatures were around 18-22 degrees to promote and retain more primary fruit flavours. 20% of the wine was fermented in new oak, with the remainder second and third use French oak. This year we put 18% of the total blend through MLF and stirred the lees every month. We whole berry fermented 5%, this small batch provides a nice savoury complexity and lift.
‘Caramel and mocha notes on nose. Creamy with elegant balance between oak, fruit and acidity. Very typical Margaret River fruit with lovely lifted lemon, slightly honeyed spicy notes on palate. RS: Great nose of smoky struck match reductiveness, Coche like complexity and fleshiness. Saline and minerally, tight acidity but plush ripe citrus fruit. BW: Caramel and mocha notes on nose. Creamy with elegant balance between oak, fruit and acidity. Very typical Margaret River fruit with lovely lifted lemon, slightly honeyed spicy notes on palate. AH: Cool, slightly smoky, example of Chardonnay. A fine line of acidity here. Purity of fruit. Fleshy, good concentration but not a blockbuster style. Refined, elegant, very good potential for ageing. Zesty, refined, long and succulent on the finish.’ Decanter, 96, White wine of the year 2020. Drink 2020-2026
