Angelo Gaja took over the family business in 1970. ‘The challenge was to maintain the basic power and depth of Nebbiolo while polishing the wines to give them richer colour, fuller fruit, better balance and a more refined style’. At the forefront of promoting the wines of Piemonte and Barbarresco in particular Gaja replanted many of the vineyards, installed temperature-controlled, stainless steel tanks, introduced the concept of ageing wines in small oak barrels and began releasing single vineyard Barbarescos. Most controversial of all (least of all with his own father), Gaja planted some Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay on prime Barbaresco land. Today Gaja has 101 hectares of vineyards divided into 32 separate plots and produces around 30,000 cases of wine a year. The influence of the next generation, spearheaded by Angelo's daughter Gaia, has continued with the family's search for continuous improvement. The addition of Barbera into the crus has ceased and their estate in Bolgheri has seen the blends reworked to better reflect the lessons learned about soils and grapes since they first planted the vines here over 20 years ago. Gaja produces world-class wines and the Pieve Santa Restituta property in Montalcino also sees them produce a small range of exquisitely crafted Brunello wines. The Camarcanda estate in Bolgheri and lateste venture Idda on Moutn Etna (in partnership with Graci, no less) rounds out this incredible stable.
Gaja Idda Etna Rosso 2020
14% abv
“From a celebrated joint venture between Gaja and Graci, the Idda 2020 Etna Rosso is beautiful in the glass with deep ruby intensity and a vibrant appearance. The bouquet reveals aromas of dried cherry, blue flower, campfire ash and grilled rosemary. There are herbal and floral sensations, along with the volcanic aromas that always come with Etna reds. To the palate, the wine is lean and elegant, showing nice tannic tension. It is firm without being bitter or powdery. Nerello Mascalese sees a 2% component of Nerello Cappuccio in this 34,000-bottle release.” 2023 – 2033

Intense and bright ruby color. Violet, black cherry and mulberry notes rise from the glass. 2019 IDDA has a clear expression of ripe and sweet fruit on the palate, yet shows accents of tomato leaves and oregano. With a charming and juicy body, characterized by harmony and freshness, with ripe and well-integrated tannins. The finish is lingering.
Fermentation and maceration for around three weeks partially in oak and in concrete vats. Followed by 24 months of ageing in oak and concrete.
Taking inspiration from Sicily’s Mount Etna, the Gaja family have begun their next winemaking adventure on the slopes of Europe’s highest active volcano in partnership with the renowned local Graci family. Together the families own 20 hectares of vineyards, between 600m and 800m a.s.l., in the village of Belpasso and Biancavilla. The grape varieties currently planted are Nerello Mascalese (reds) and Carricante
