Raffaele Pagano founded his Joaquin winery on a mission: to become the flag bearer for the great wines of Campania - the Fiano & Aglianico. Located in Montefalcione, home to the two DOCG wines, Fiano di Avellino and Aglianico Taurasi, he started with a meticulous study and selection of antique, pre-phylloxera vineyards in the area of Lapio and Montefalcione, known as the habitat of origin of the varieties. In fact, Raffaele has worked tirelessly to reach vinous expressions that are the quintessence of the historic local terroirs. Joaquin also crafts wines on the beautiful island of Capri. Here they perform what the producer likes to call “triage viticulture:” the recovery of indigenous varieties and the restoration of small, local vineyards. In fact, the project JOAQUIN DALL’ISOLA (Joaquin from the island) strives to safeguard the few vines left on the island with varietals like Greco, Falanghina, Biancolella and the local “Ciunchesa” (an antique clone of Greco).

Joaquin JQN203 Piante a Lapio Fiano d’Avellino 2018
12% abv
“The 2018 Fiano Piante a Lapio is impossible to ignore, with a cascade of minty herbs and citrus sorbet accentuating freshly sliced nectarine. This smooths over the palate with silken, near oily textures, perfectly offset by a core of zesty acidity as ripe pit fruits and hints of ginger swirl throughout. It finishes long yet remarkably fresh and potent, leaving a lifting air of menthol and confectionary spice to linger on. This is Fiano at its absolute finest. The Piante a Lapio is sourced from 80-to-100-year-old Fiano planted in high-altitude volcanic soils. It is fermented spontaneously in chestnut and acacia wood casks and aged in those same vessels for nearly five years.” 2024 – 2029
93 Points, Eric Guido, Vinous, March 2024
A truly unique, primaeval style Fiano from vines up to a century-old, some pre-phylloxera vines cultivated in volcanic soil in the Lapio CRU. A white wine crafted to defy time. Fermentation for 60 days “sous voile”in oak tanks in a temperature controlled environment. Aged in 500litre Chestnut, acacia and oak casks.
Antique golden colour with amber hues. Extremely complex bouquet with an almost volcanic character of gunpowder aromas, backed up by scents of hazelnut, grapefruit and braised apples with a light oxidised touch. The taste is tight and long, with nervy acidity and a mineral persistence.
This winemaking model has subsequently been applied to other varieties as well, creating a unique production philosophy which characterizes Joaquin. Their motto is “a new vintage, a new project,” and in fact only the wines which excel in a given vintage are produced.
