Luigi’s vines are located in the Southern heart of Campania in an area of immense natural beauty and home to the ancient Greek site of Paestum. His wines are wonderfully pure expressions of the traditional local grapes, Fiano d’Avellino and Aglianico. Since his first vintage in 1996, Luigi has tended and improved the old family vineyards as the source of his exceptional fruit. Over the last few years, along with addition of new plantings adjacent to existing vineyards, Luigi has extensively upgraded and refurbished the winery giving him even better tools at his disposal to craft magnificent organic wines. This is the ‘other’ Campania, soils here are more commonly of the Cilento Flysch with sandstone, clay and soft marls giving a more mineral fruit expression than the rich energy of the Avellino volcanic-calcaerous soils.
Luigi Maffini Pietraincatenata 2023
14.5% abv
The Fiano Pietraincatenata comes from a 2ha parcel from the higher vineyard and the grapes are picked slightly later. The wine is fermented in new oak and then aged in new and 2nd passage barrique for 8 months. A luminous yellow in the glass like concentrated sunshine this is complex and full of ripe pear, candied lemon and prickling grapefruit acidity.

“Airy and fresh, the 2023 Fiano Pietraincatenata wafts up with a dusty blend of dried flowers, shavings of ginger and peach sorbet. It is opulent upon entry, with silken textures, yet quickly builds as a core of salty minerals mixes with tart green apple and a twang of sharply tuned citrus fruits. The 2023 shows remarkable depth and complexity, leaving a lemony concentration that puckers the cheeks as a saline flourish lingers on. While already thrilling to taste today, the Pietraincatenata is built for the cellar.” 2025 -2032

Readers in search of saline-inflected, tension-filled Fiano should look no further than Luigi Maffini. These wines hail from Cilento in the southern reaches of Campania, not the classic high elevations and volcanic soils of Avellino. These are poised, precise wines with the ability to evolve beautifully in the cellar.
