Established in 1982 by Dr Richard and Jill McIntyre, Moorooduc Estate is a small, family run wine business that has developed an enviable reputation for complex and food friendly wines. They were amongst the very earliest grape prospectors to see the potential for making great Pinot Noir and Chardonnay on the Mornington Peninsula. These days they have been joined by their highly talented Master of Wine daughter Kate. Their philosophy in everything is to make the most of top-quality ingredients. Intensive, hands-on care in the three vineyards (one belonging to the family, one to a family friend and one to their viticulturalist) produces the best possible fruit for their wines. Land is organically dry farmed with minimal use of chemicals, Wild yeast ferments and minimal intervention winemaking, with a nod to traditional Burgundian techniques, allow their wines to express their site specificity, or terroir. Production is only around 5000 cases annually.
Moorooduc Pinot Gris 2018
14% abv
Pale gold in colour with a lovely fragrant nose of yellow pear, chamomile, elderflower, blossom and a touch of honey. On the palate the pear and quince fruit characters are rich and mouth filling with lovely textural phenolics. The wine is long and full flavoured with a tangy seaspray saltiness on the finish.
Pinot Gris from two Moorooduc vineyards on the Mornington Peninsula. Wild yeast fermentation of unsettled juice in (older) French oak barrels gives the wine a very long and satisfying finish.
Hand harvesting Whole bunch pressing 100% barrel fermented in 2-3 year old French oak 10 months in wood on lees with 1 racking prior to bottling Light fining and filtration
2018 was a very special vintage that produced perfectly ripened, complex, delicious wines. Warm, calm spring weather in November was very conducive for flowering and fruit set. Because of this abundance of crop, we had to maintain careful management of crop levels to ensure top quality fruit and wine. Tight, compact bunches could have been in danger of disease if conditions had been humid, but beautiful, warm, dry weather in late January through February kept things disease-free. This run of moderate conditions through to vintage allowed us to pick parcels when we wanted, rather than being rushed to harvest by weather events.
