Narupa Wines, situated in the heart of the Val do Salnés valley in the Rías Baixas region of Spain, is a small family-run winery founded by four friends - the Pedrosa brothers (Rosa and Fran), Ruth Campelo, and Nacho Jímenez in 2013. Their exceptional Albariño wines display the diversity and quality of their local grape. The wines captures the essence of the Galician coast with its fresh, saline, floral, and citrusy notes, balanced acidity, and minerality. They reflects the coastal influence of the Val do Salnés valley, offering a taste that is both invigorating and reminiscent of its origin: Piorno, named after a local shrub, comes from an inland vineyard 16 kilometers from the sea, featuring 50-year-old vines in sandy loam and clay loam soils of granitic origin. Started in 2013 the friends aim was to revitalise historic family vineyards from co-operative control and produce mightily fine, age-worthy Albarinos Narupa's approach to viticulture focuses on organic treatments and the avoidance of chemicals. For the top wines the winemaking process involves crushing and cold maceration of the grapes for 30 hours, followed by fermentation with native yeasts in barrels where they remains for approximately 10 months. Each wine, whether it be Alalá, Caneco, or Piorno, offers a distinct taste experience, reinforcing Narupa's position as a notable and innovative winery in the region.
Narupa ‘Alala’ Albarino 2021
13% abv
A ripe, complex and flavoursome wine with aromas of ripe stone fruit, orange blossom and a touch of sweet spice. It is surprisingly fresh, unctuous, with a lively acidity, a pleasant passage and a long, balanced finish with a salty touch.
“The 2021 Alalá, which also has a new label this year, has an explosive nose, developed, perfumed, open and expressive, with hints of white flowers, apricots and grass. It’s a textbook bottle-aged Albariño, complex, elegant and nuanced. The palate feels superb too, balanced and sharp. It’s a year of moderate ripeness, and the wine comes in at 12.5% alcohol. It’s delicious and ready.” 2024 – 2031
94 Points, Luis Guttierez, The Wine Advocate, July 2025
Made from Albariño white grapes sourced from vineyards located in the municipalities of Ribadumia, Barro and Sanxenxo (Pontevedra), cultivated using a combination of “zero residue” and biological plant protection treatments alongside conventional methods.
The wine that has the greatest presence in the final blend of Alalá comes from vineyards located further inland (Ribadumia and Barro) — less exposed to sea breezes, with higher rainfall and temperatures, and more weathered soils rich in clay and silt. This is complemented, in smaller proportion, by wines from more coastal vineyards (Sanxenxo), exposed to maritime influence, with lower rainfall and temperatures and less degraded, sandier soils. During production, most of the bunches are foot-trodden and undergo cold maceration prior to pressing. The must ferments with indigenous yeasts, and the only additives used are bentonite (as a fining agent) and low doses of sulphur dioxide. What makes this wine distinctive is respect — and the passage of time.…the effort is not to mask the natural evolution of the wine. Moving away from the belief that “white wine should be consumed within the year”, the wine is released after several years in tank and bottle, when it expresses its characteristic tertiary notes developed over time (a deeper golden colour and aromas and flavours typical of ageing in bottle… without losing the vibrancy characteristic of our region).
Climate: The growing season was marked by irregular budburst due to temperature fluctuations in March, although the good sunlight of the previous year favoured high fertility. Humidity and moderate temperatures led to persistent mildew pressure. Before harvest, a sharp drop in temperatures and storms caused ripening issues and the appearance of botrytis. Ultimately, the harvest yielded wines with moderate alcohol levels, high acidity, and very good quality.
Harvest: From 18 to 20 September 2021, with manual selection of bunches and grapes in the vineyard.
Main vineyards: Outeiral (Ribadumia), Eira (Barro). Other vineyards: Fonteiro, Piñeiros and Infestas (Sanxenxo).
Soil type: Sandy-loam of granitic origin, rich in clay and silt.
Production: 5142 bottles
