The Finger Lakes AVA lies five hours north of New York city, to the south of Lake Ontario & the Canadian border. The region sits on the extremity of many a wine convention:- this is seriously cool climate production made possible only by the tempering effect of the lakes and Vinifera only arrived here in the 1950s and still has to prove its worth to many farmers more used to selling hybrids to the tourist markets. Amongst the wineries and winemakers pushing to advance the region and craft wines of quality and distinction to match the best sites' potential is local Ben Riccardi. Ben brings the sensibilities of a young gun who has worked in Sonoma, New Zealand and France along with Big Apple attitude from time honing his skills at Manhattan's City Winery. Using fruit from both Seneca and Cayuga Lakes - there are 11 Lakes in total with four considered the best for winemaking and these two with their own AVAs - Ben makes low-intervention, wild-yeast wines that revel in freshness and lower alcohol. We love the lightness of touch he brings to his Chardonnays (both unoaked and with some large barrel influence), Riesling and Cab Franc. The hybrids that can often lead the region astray- along with being freezing in the winter there can be considerable pressure on vines during hot and humid summers - are focussed and original.
Osmote Red Fox Traminette Friuliano 2023
12% abv
Wildly aromatic white blend. It is full of tropical fruits and floral aromas with a dry but rounded body.
“Highly perfumed, this small batch blend of Tocai Friulano with hybrid varieties Traminette and Cayuga, wafts hibiscus, lemongrass and key lime pie aromas. The (mostly) dry palate is a slightly richer beast than the heady nose implies, a slip n’ slide in the mouth, the acidity an inner tube of freshness.” — Christina Pickard, The Wine Enthusiast
A blend of three varieties, the Tocai Friuliano and Traminette both had some gentle skin contact to give this wine extra volume and an unmatched aromatic intensity. The sass of Rihanna and the sophistication of Sade, all in one package. Gorgeous new label art done by Finger Lakes artist, Cruz Newman.
Tocai Friuliano was destemmed and macerated for 5 days, then pressed during the early signs of fermentation where it was then blended with Traminette juice. The wine was cofermented in stainless steel and then blended with Cayuga White to increase the acidity.
Tocai Friuliano- Northern Italian/ Slovenian white, finding a new home on the north east shore of Seneca Lake near Geneva, NY. Tropical and low acid.
Traminette- A hybrid grape release from Cornell University combining both Gewurztraminer and a Seyval variety. A modern disease resistant variety that grows with a minimum of vineyard inputs and exhibits the floral terpenes of its Gewurztraminer parent
Cayuga White- The first commercial release from the Cornell University grape breeding program. It has formed the backbone of Finger Lakes grape culture since the 1970s and is very disease and cold resistant, happily growing in vineyards on its own roots, without grafting.
