Tenuta di Ghizzano San Germano Passito 37.5cl 2019

14% abv

Vol- 37.5cl

Brooding deep amber in colour, aromas of dired fruits, steeped in Vin Santo from well withered grapes: spiced figs and apricots with a spritz of citrus tension. Balanced and harmonious taste with interplay between alcohol, sugar residues and acidity

Named after the Patron Saint of the village of GHIZZANO, “San Germano” is made from Trebbiano, Colombana and Malvasia Bianca grapes hand harvested in late September and hung up on stainless steel wires to dry. After approximately four months the best grapes are selected and pressed. The wine is transferred into small oak barrels with a capacity of 100 litres (traditionally called “caratelli”), having sufficient space inside to allow fermentation during the two years the wine spends there. Ginevra made the move away from Vin Santo by reducing time in barrel from the of 3 years minimum for the category to retain a purer, dried grape character in this wine.

The hill-top hamlet of Ghizzano lies in the Pisan hills, close to the Tuscan coast. The Venerosi Pesciolini family settled here in the late 14th Century and the estate now encompasses around 350ha with 20ha of vines. Vineyards sit within this gentle landscape at 200m above sea level and are blessed with a mild climate thanks to the maritime influence. Wine has been bottled since 1985, organically certified from 2008 and is moving in a biodynamic direction with concrete eggs a recent addition. The property is now in the hands of Ginevra Pesciolini and her wines continue to gain almost annual Tre Bicchieri awards. As a part of her philosophy of ensuring the wines represent their location Ginevra has also been reducing the amount of new oak in her SuperTuscan creations. Natural yeasts, pressing under foot and a move to using larger format oak are also integral to the style of the wines.
