Tenuta Santa Maria is a private estate of the Bertani family. Located in the Arbizzano frazione of Negrar, one of the most highly regarded terroirs of the Valpolicella Classica, the 16th century Villa Mosconi Bertani and its vineyards are intertwined with the history of the regions' most famous wine - Amarone. The great grandfather of today's proprietor, Gaetano Bertani, along with his brother Giovan Battista, founded the estate in 1857. The family was responsbile for the introduction of the term 'Amarone', coined in 1936 within the very cellars of the villa complex in reference to a wine the Bertani family had been producing since the early 1900s under the name 'Recioto Secco'. The estate, along with the Colognola ai Colli property in the Val d'illasi to the east, were retained post 2013 when the Gruppo Bertani was sold. Giovanni & Guglielmo, work to express the quality of this land by combining traditional methods, selected technology, and experience passed down through generations of family tradition. The vineyards are in organic conversion.

The wine is deep garnet red. On the nose, aromas of spices — cloves, cinnamon, cocoa, and roasted coffee — and jammy fruit emerge. Soft and elegant on the palate, it features velvety tannins and notes of tobacco, chocolate, nutmeg, and cinnamon, finishing with dried fruits like raisins and brandied cherries. A fresh mineral note enhances its smoothness, leading to a long finish.
Drawn from just two meticulously selected 500L barrels, this is the debut of a wine shaped by care, tradition and patience. Corvina 70%, Corvinone 10% & Rondinella 20% Hand-harvested at dawn from the highest parcels of the estate’s original walled (brol0) vineyards, only the most pristine grape clusters were selected, followed by a second sorting at the winery. The wine then underwent a carefully monitored appassimento process and minimal-intervention vinification before aging an astonishing fourteen years in large oak barrels, followed by additional years in bottle.
1,300 bottles made, bottled after 17 years in oak.
These barrels pre date the 2013 sale of the Benanti company and name that led Gaetano and Giovanni’s father, Gaetano, to secure the ownership of this historic Negrar estate & vineyards in Valpantena & Illasi.
